Day in the Life of a Surgeon

On 29th of June we were delighted to welcome Mr Yemi Idowu (MBBS,BSc, MRCS), a plastic surgeon, to Northolt High School for the third ‘Day in the Life of a Surgeon’ workshop. Twenty seven year 10 students had the opportunity to learn about life as a plastic surgeon working at St Mary’s Hospital, London. This year has been especially challenging as St Mary’s Hospital treated victims of the Westminster and London Bridge attacks, as well as the Grenfell fire. Mr Idowu spoke about the types of injuries people suffered as a result of these events, and the work of the NHS in looking after patients affected.

Students were then challenged to learn how to suture (stitch) using surgical instruments. Many of the year 10s produced excellent sutures to close up the ‘wounds’ in their pig trotters. The workshop was a unique and enjoyable experience which gave students an insight into the dedication and skill required to become a doctor.

For those feeling inspired and interested in finding out more, Mr Idowu and St Mary’s Hospital feature in the BBC documentary ‘Hospital’ which is available on iPlayer and BBC2.
